A populist political movement is born of one Sephardic man’s growing discontent with discrimination in this lively, insightful comic drama loosely based on the founding of Israel’s Shas party in 1986. Israel’s legendary Orthodox actor Shuli Rand plays the fictive firebrand who stumbles into politics out of frustration with the Sephardim’s second-class status. Fueled by moral outrage, this common man (think Jimmy Stewart in a kippah) makes many amusing missteps as he gradually discovers his capacity for leadership. A powerful performance, bouncy score, and witty script make this historical fiction more fun than it has a right to be.
