A turbulent teen love story unfolds during the 1989 civil war in Ethiopia in Aäläm-Wärqe Davidian’s semi-autobiographical drama of lost innocence. An Ethiopian Jew, the filmmaker fled to Israel as a girl and her beautifully crafted coming-of-age story feels deeply personal, urgent, and authentic. Emotionally illuminating yet unsentimental, bleak yet lyrical, “Fig Tree” captures this terrifying time of transition for a young woman about to leave the world she knows behind.
