Based on the Latvian novel A Boy and a Dog, this award-winning Latvian feature film tells the true story of the Latvian Oskar Schindler, his wife, and 10-year-old son. Žanis Lipke supports his family by working in a warehouse of the Luftwaffe and smuggling at night, until he unaccountably takes on another role, that of savior, heroically working to protect a group of Jews on his property. An “ordinary” man of limited means who embarks on a covert operation to save local Jews from Nazi persecution and certain death in Riga, Lipke’s motivations may be unclear, but his actions define him.
